Consolidating Community Building
in Public Living Rooms
Project Time: 1. September 2023 – 30. March 2025
Program is funded by Erasmus+
Creating Sustainable, Inclusive Spaces for Adult Learning and Social Connection
In a world where isolation and disconnection are increasing, the Public Living Room model offers a powerful answer: open, self-managed spaces that invite people of all backgrounds to connect, learn, and participate.
This Erasmus+ funded project brings together partners from the Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. Together, we are working to consolidate and strengthen the community-building function of these spaces, while improving the quality of adult education offered within them.
Objectives
-
Analyze how Public Living Rooms function as hubs for learning, care, and civic participation.
-
Evaluate and enhance educational quality using nine key dimensions of adult learning in informal settings.
-
Transfer knowledge and leadership methods to the next generation of facilitators and community builders.
-
Strengthen international collaboration and exchange between grassroots organizations.
What Are Public Living Rooms?
These are community-created spaces — informal, welcoming, and low-threshold — where people can meet, rest, talk, create, and learn. They operate without hierarchies and are shaped by those who use them. They are often intergenerational and serve as accessible platforms for neighborhood engagement, creativity, and empowerment.
Project Activities
-
Workshops, coaching, and local mapping to understand current challenges and opportunities.
-
International meetings and peer exchanges to share best practices and learning tools.
-
Documentation and visibility work, including stories, visuals, and toolkits for future use.
